Time as 4th dimension Concept Calendar

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

So, obviously I have changed my concept from the "time as 4th dimension" to "Throw the Day Away" conceptual calendar. I also feel really inspired by this project by I story I remember from a magazine about "Extreme Recycling". There was this woman who was taking the challenge of throwing away only one bag of trash a year. Also, in Portland Oregon this year a new ordinance in the city called for monthly garbage disposal, instead of weekly.
Although Time can be an abstract concept, when it is wasted it is as real and as tangible as anything being wasted. The Throw the Day away conceptual calendar will make the user conscious of everything they throw out, or don't throw out, for whichever reasons. And at the end of the day they can throw it all away, for better or for worse.

Looking At Negative Spaces for Inspiration

I was thinking so abstractly about time, but I need to create a real object, so I need to be more realistic with my thoughts. I have been thinking so much about what I have wanted my calendar to be, that I have wasted a lot of time. I originally didn't want my calendar to be dispensable, but then I started to think about the negative space here. I thought, why not embrace that which I was trying to get away from? Why not chose the concept Wasted Time? So I began thinking of waste.

I thought immediately of toilet paper. Waste. Every day goes down the drain, like crap leaving the toilet bowl. Why not make a calendar from a roll of toilet paper? Everyday you get one square of charmin. But I need to think about waste more, and do more research about what is waste. Its garbage. Time wasted. Trash bags are the ultimate symbol of waste. Everyday we throw stuff away, and we don't even think about it. Imagine if you you buy your garbage bags in bulk, (the mini bags, because thats what I use) and every day throw out junk, and you watch the year go buy in trash. Haste makes Waste, they say.
